Deal Announcement: “Dempsey Bob: In His Own Voice”
Dempsey Bob: In His Own Voice is the first full-scale solo museum exhibition and book of this extraordinary Tahltan-Tlingit artist, one of the finest living carvers of Canada’s Northwest Coast. Drawing from extensive interviews with the artist, the book presents the story of the artist’s life told his own way, offering extensive and often intimate reflections on the creation of particular works. Material from his sketchbooks will be combined with his carvings to create a vivid portrait of the creative process. Works for the exhibition and publication will be drawn from key private collections in Canada but also from public collections in Canada, the US and beyond, including the University of British Columbia’s Museum of Anthropology, the Smithsonian Institution; National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka; Hamburgisches Museum fur Volkerskkunde, Hamburg; Canada House, London; Centennial Museum, Ketchikan; the Royal British Columbia Museum; and the National Gallery of Canada. The exhibition will be curated by McMichael Canadian Art Collection’s Chief Curator Sarah Milroy, who will also serve as the interviewer and editor of Dempsey Bob’s transcripts.
Releasing fall 2021.
