Nicola Levell
Nicola Levell is Associate Professor of Museum and Visual Anthropology at UBC and an independent curator. Her research and publications focus on exhibitions, collections history, public and performing arts, and storytelling. She has curated exhibitions and art installations in the United Kingdom, Portugal, the United States and Canada. As curator of collections history at the Horniman Museum and Gardens, London, she was creative lead for the Centenary Gallery: 100 Years of Collecting (2001–16), and author of the associated book Oriental Visions: Exhibitions, Travel, and Collecting in the Victorian Age (2000). Her most recent book, Mischief Making: Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, Art, and the Seriousness of Play (2021), explores the intersections of oral narratives, graphic practice and contemporary art in the work of Yahgulanaas, a Haida artist. Her latest exhibition, Shadows, Strings and Other Things: The Enchanting Theatre of Puppets, won an Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2020 from the Canadian Museum Association.
