Masterworks from the Audain Art Museum, Whistler
The new Audain Art Museum’s opening is a major event in the Canadian arts scene, and its magnificent collection will be showcased in a stunning new book
We are delighted to announce the forthcoming publication of Masterworks from the Audain Art Museum, Whistler by Ian Thom which will be released in October to coincide with the Audain Art Museum’s opening on November 21, 2015.
The book brings together many highlights from the museum’s permanent collection. It features exquisitely produced First Nations masks, many of them repatriated to British Columbia from collections around the world, as well as works by Emily Carr and E.J. Hughes that span their entire careers. It includes stunning examples of modernism by Lawren Harris and images by innovative practitioners such as Jack Shadbolt, Toni Onley, Gordon Smith and Claude Breeze. Contemporary audiences will recognize ground-breaking works by photo-conceptual artists such as Rodney Graham, Ken Lum, Stephen Waddell and Jeff Wall.
The 56,000 sq.ft. museum was conceived in late 2012 by Vancouver home builder Michael Audain, who commissioned Patkau Architects to design a building to accommodate the extensive collection of British Columbia art owned by Audain and his wife Yoshiko Karasawa, as well as to provide a gallery for temporary exhibitions. The Audain Art Museum will be Canada’s newest Category A art facility and one of the largest in Western Canada. It will be open year round.
Figure 1’s Associate Publisher, Richard Nadeau, said “The opening of the Audain Art Museum is a milestone in the world of Canadian arts, and we are thrilled to be a part of it. The book will be a fitting tribute to this amazing collection.”
