My Thali takes home Gold Taste Canada Award

Ottawa chef Joe Thottungal was awarded a Taste Canada award for his cookbook My Thali: A Simple Indian Kitchen on Monday, October 21, 2024.

The cookbook, co-authored by Anne DesBrisay, won Gold in the Regional/Cultural category, presented at the 27th annual award ceremony in Toronto.

“This year’s winners, selected from a diverse array of submissions, exemplify the passion and creativity within Canada’s culinary scene. Their contributions not only enrich our understanding of food but also celebrate the cultural heritage and innovative spirit that make Canadian cuisine unique,” Taste Canada said in a statement.

In My Thali Thottungal shares his favorite home-cooked recipes and stories from his homeland of Kerala, connecting past and present in the world of Indian cooking today. This exploration of food heritage features a collection of 85 signature recipes—from simple raitas to nourishing dals and fragrant curries—that can be easily re-created at home, using accessible ingredients and everyday cooking equipment, and without any compromise to flavor or authenticity.

Early this year, the cookbook was also awarded the Gourmand World Cookbook Award in the India Category.
