Q&A: Jana Roerick, author of “The Little Island Bake Shop”
The Little Island Bake Shop cookbook author, Jana Roerick has built a successful career as a professional baker, has taught baking courses and workshops, and is an active community supporter and fundraiser. Her bakery Jana’s Bake Shop has been serving delicious homemade desserts to Salt Spring Island for more than fifteen years.
How do you normally start your day?
With a cup of coffee while I scoop muffins for early morning delivery.
What are you reading at the moment?
I’m currently reading through ‘the best of’ my cookbooks which includes Baking with Julia and Martha Stewart’s Baking Handbook.
What’s your favourite go-to ingredient?
Ginger.
What food is your guilty pleasure?
Popcorn with lots of butter.
Who has influenced your baking the most?
My girlfriend and mentor Nancy Brownsell. We have spent over 20 years tasting and talking baked goods.
Is there a food you can’t bring yourself to eat?
Not a lot in that department, though I do steer clear of green peppers.
